D-Day: Getting off the Beaches After the Dieppe disaster Allied planners realized they needed ways to get their men off the beaches quickly.
Once inland there are fewer German defences and more open room to maneuver. The Germans realized this and their key strategy
is to do what worked at Dieppe: trap the invaders on the beach and slaughter them. The German beach front defences are formidable:
minefields, hundreds of miles of barbed wire in row after row, ten foot high sea walls, and concrete machine gun emplacements.
What's the best way to overcome these obstacles and get our soldiers off the beaches? - send in regular infantry supported with tanks brought in close to shore on huge LCT's (Landing Craft - Tanks) - rely on plenty of air support and ship bombardments to destroy all enemy obstacles, then send in the infantry - create a lot of specialized weapons such as floating tanks, pre-fabricated ramps, to support the infantry What should the Allies do?Bring in tanks on board LCT's Use air and sea bombardment to destroy the defences Use custom designed floating tanks and assault vehicles |
