Well done, Corporal! You chose the right solution

The Americans did not use any specialized equipment. They relied on the bombardments, regular infantry and tanks brought ashore by LCT's. Of all the Allied attackers, they had the most difficult time advancing off the beaches. The air and sea bombardments missed far more targets than they hit and the huge lumbering LCT's didn't bring the tanks ashore until well after the first wave of soldiers. The British and Canadians used some of the lessons learned at Dieppe. The specialized armoured vehicles they created, nicknamed "funnies", were a success and definitely helped the attackers overcome the beach defences and obstacles.

"DD" or Dual Drive tanks had a propeller for propulsion in the water plus tracks for moving on land. The canvas "skirt" was intended to keep the tank buoyant. At Utah and Omaha beaches, extremely rough waves swamped the tanks. They sank to the bottom and their crews drowned.
