Once again "D" is the best answer - using every method possible to pound the German trenches and force them to take cover. After the Somme the Germans knew how to deal with long bombardments: send almost everyone into the underground bunkers, leaving only a few sentries topside. The Canadian bombardment also silenced over 80% of the German guns, preventing them from stopping the attackers.

The creeping barrage helped drive the Germans underground and it acted as a screen the Canadians could walk behind - so long as they didn't mind shells continously exploding only 100 metres ahead of them! It was so effective that the Germans were still in their bunkers as the Canadians captured their Number 1 and 2 trenches!

The Canadians also fired their heavy machine guns continuously in long high rainbow arcs, pinning down the Germans in the Number 3 and 4 trenches.
