The German counter-attack is fierce but without artillery support it is doomed.
Your men pour on fire from their rifles and Lewis guns. Others launch rifle
grenades or toss hand grenades at any one who reaches your wire.

The attacks continue off and on for two hours. By then your men are exhausted
and the gun barrels are red hot - but you still hold the trench! In front of you there
is a pile of dead or dying Germans. The slaughter sickens you, but better them
than you. After dark stretcher bearers go out to recover the wounded. The dead
will be buried after the battle ends.

Tomorrow the battle continues but your unit will stay in reserve. A fresh British
battalion will attack Trenches 3 and 4. After today's slaughter you wonder if you
even could fight tomorrow.
