Historical Note: The RCN in the Pacific

In the spring of 1945, Canada sent the cruiser HMCS Uganda to operate with the British Pacific Fleet's carrier force. In April HMCS Uganda made repeated strikes at targets on Taiwan, and the nearby islands of Ishigaki and Miyako. HMCS Uganda also participated in the campaign at Okinawa.

Shortly after V-E Day the Canadian government decided that only officers and men who specifically volunteered would continue to participate in the war against Japan. Two-thirds of Uganda's 900-strong company decided not to volunteer and as a result by the end of July HMCS Uganda sailed for home - the first ship to vote itself out of a war!
