Naval Headlines: Spring 1944

March 5 - HMCS Gatineau and Chaudiere force U-744 to the surface after a 32 hour cat-and mouse hunt. U-744 is captured - then sunk

March 8 - A firefighting team from HMCS St Laurent helps Swedish ship San Francisco battle a fire for seven hours before the blaze is extinguished.

March 10- U-845 sunk after being forced to surface by a combined attack from HMCS St. Laurent, Owen Sound, and HMS Swansea, Forester

Many Canadian warships are reassigned to duties in European waters, in preparation for the invasion of western Europe:

Support group EG 11's mission is to protect convoys in English Channel. It includes HMCS St Laurent, Chaudiere, Gatineau, Kootenay, and Ottawa

Support Group EG 12 includes HMCS Skeena, Qu-Appelle, Restigouche, Assiniboine, and Saskatchewan. Their mission is to protect west end of English Channel convoys from U-Boats

The 10th Destroyer Squadron's four Tribal class "super destroyers": HMCS Haida, Huron, Athabaska, and Iroquois are in action against German surface shipping
