In a three day battle the U.S. Pacific Fleet crushes the Japanese Imperial Navy at the Battle of Leyte Gulf. The defeat is so severe that Japanese warships play virtually no further part in the war. The victory allows U.S. forces to liberate the Philippines and begin the final drive towards Japan itself.
