Naval Headlines: Autumn, 1944

August 15 - "Operation Dragoon": 150,000 Allied soldiers make a second "D-Day"amphibious landing in the south of France. The landings are highly successful and within a month 800,000 Allied soldiers are driving north from the Mediterranean

August 18th/20th - Canadian destroyers Chaudiere, Kootenay and Ottawa of the 11th EG sink U-621 on the 18th off La Rochelle and U-984 two days later to the west of Brest

August 20 - Ottawa, Kootenay, Chaudiere sink U-984 off the coast near Brest

Sept 1 - HMCS Assiniboine joins Escort Group 11 and helps sink U-247

Oct 4 - 1944 HMCS Chebogue torpedoed and damaged beyond repair by U-1227

Oct 14 - HMCS Magog torpedoed and damaged beyond repair by U-1223

Oct 24 - After reassignment to the Iceland area, HMCS Skeena loses its anchors in the midst of a fierce storm and is wrecked on Videy island. 15 crew die in the rescue attempt before the storm dies down
