Headline: The Dieppe Raid, August 19, 1942

On the morning of August 19, 1942 6,000 Allied Troops, including 5,000 Canadians, made an amphibious landing at the French coastal town of Dieppe. Their intent was to make a one-day raid to test out German defences protecting the harbour. Eight Royal Navy destroyers, two minesweeper flotilla and nine landing ships participated. From the beginning many thing went wrong and by the time the landing craft hit the shore the Germans were fully prepared. In one horrible day, the Canadian forces suffered 3,367 casualties including 1,946 prisoners and 907 killed.
