Naval Headlines: October 22nd
Canadian destroyer "Margaree" escorting Liverpool-out convoy OL8, is lost in collision with merchantman "Port Fairy"
to the west of Ireland - cut in half behind the bridge. The front half sinks immediately. 6 officers, and 28 men are
rescued from rear portion. 4 officers, 138 men are lost including captain. Many of the missing are survivors of the
sinking of the "Fraser"
Battle of the Atlantic: October 1940
Long range Focke-Wulf Kondor bombers continue to range the waters off Ireland and on the 26th, bomb and damage the ocean
liner "Empress of Britain". The Luftwaffe's long-range aircraft are now flying from bases in Norway as well as France. In a
series of wolf-pack attacks on lightly-defended Canada/UK convoys, U-boats sink more than 30 ships from just two convoys!
Fortunately for the Allies a number of measures are being taken to ease the dire situation including the USA "loaning"
Britain 50 older destroyers and the British escort ship building program is starting to deliver new ships. Ships crews
are receiving specialized anti-submarine training. Plans are started for permanent escort groups. Co-operation between
RAF Coastal Command and Western Approaches Command is steadily improving. But there is still a long way to go, and vast
areas of the Atlantic are without air or sea anti-submarine cover.
