Test: Iced-Up Ship

An Arctic cold front hits your convoy. The temperature is minus 20. The sea temperature is also below freezing but the heavy seas keep the water moving. Spray from the waves freezes solid on the bridge, the superstructure, and masts. The weight of all the ice is making the ship top-heavy. There is a real danger of the ship rolling over.

What should the captain order?

A. Use ships boilers to produce hot water. Pump this through the fire hoses to melt the ice.

B. Distribute axes and detail crew members out to chop off the ice

C. Turn around and sail south until you reach warmer waters.

D. Spray the iced-up areas with de-icer fluid using the fire hoses and extinguishers
