Here's more vital information for you, recruit. Pay close attention! It's vital
that you be able to identify different sizes ( and strengths) of warships quickly. Your life may depend on it!
Battleship - These were the largest, most heavily armed warships. A battleship was between 700 and 900 feet (215 -275m ) long,
with up to 16 inches (40 cm) of steel armour, and six to nine massive 14 to 16 inch (35-40 cm) guns that could fire 900-1000 kg shells
up to 30,000m. Battleships also had multiple smaller gun turrets and many anti-aircraft guns. They displaced 35,00
to 50,000 tons (32-45,000 tonnes)and carried a crew of 1400 to 2000.
Cruiser - Cruisers were divided into two categories - heavy and light. A heavy cruiser normally displaced 10,000
- 15,000 tons 9-13,000 tonnes) , had eight or nine eight inch (20 cm) guns, and has a belt of 2 - 3 inch (5-8 cm) armour. A light cruiser had eight to
twelve, 6 inch (15 cm) guns, a displacement of 8000- 10,000 tons (7-9000 tonnes) and no armour. Cruisers normally had a crew of 700 to 1000.
Destroyer - Destroyers are the main multi-purpose warships of a navy. Their duties can include convoy escorts,
fleet screen vessels, anti-submarine patrols, close-in support for the army, and individual patrols or raids.
Destroyers typically had four to eight 4 to 5 inch (10-12.5 cm) guns in single or dual turrets, plus torpedo tubes, depth charges,
and anti-aircraft defenses. Destroyers were normally around 80 - 100 metres long, displaced 1000 tons (900 tonnes) and had a
crew of 150 - 200.
Corvette - Corvettes were small slow warships designed to protect convoys and hunt submarines even in very rough weather.
They were 60 to 70 metres long, displaced under 900 tons, and were armed with a single cannon, two 20 mm machine guns
and depth charge launchers. They normally had a crew of around 100.
