Crawling forwards might work, if your men can get that far before the enemy machine guns, rifles, artillery, mortars and grenades kill them.

Canadians in WW1 learned that advancing on two fronts and only moving when the machine gun was sweeping the other way is very effective - if you have nerve and can get your timing right.
