Decision: D-Day Clearing the Beaches

The Germans expected an invasion somewhere along the northern coast of France. As part of their defences they rammed tens of thousands of steel posts into the beaches. These posts were only visible during low tide. At high tide the water covered them, making it impossible for landing craft pilots to avoid them. Many of these posts were rigged with explosives as well.

The German defences presented the Allied invasion force with two frightful options:
1. Attack at high tide and pray that enough landing craft avoided the obstacles and delivered their soldiers into the beach.
2. Attack at low tide, when all the obstacles were visible, but force the soldiers to have a long walk over the mud flats while under massive German gunfire.

What's the best way to clear away the steel barriers and mine fields before the Allied landing craft head for the beaches?

- use aircraft to bomb the barriers

- send in frog men to blow-up the barriers

- wait for a really low tide so all the obstacles will be visible above the water

What should the Allies do?

Bomb the beaches

Send in frogmen

Attack on low tide
