Canadian soldiers from the First Division disembarked in Liverpool and then took trains to their training base in Salisbury,
near Stonehenge. The winter of 1939-40 was so wet and cold on the Salisbury Plain that the Canadians moved to new camp
locations in 1940. At first training consisted of preparations for WW1 era trench warfare, with outdated weapons. By the
time the Second Division arrived in August, 1940 both the equipment and the training were upgraded, but there was still
plenty of marching drill, physical exercises and route marches.
