September 3rd - After the loss of Sicily, The Italian government and military surrenders.
Dictator Benito Mussolini is put under house arrest. The German forces in Italy, however,
continue fighting. On the same day the Allies commence a three-pronged invasion of mainland Italy.
Canadian and British forces land at the toe of the Italian boot and American forces land further
up the peninsula near Naples, while a third British force lands at Taranto. This triple invasion
is intended to spread out German defenders and catch them between Allied armies. After rapid initial
successes, the Allies run into much more serious resistance midway up the Italian peninsula.
