Some 619,636 Canadians enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the war, and approximately 424,000 served overseas. Of these men and women,
59,544 members of the CEF died during the war, 51,748 of them as a result of enemy action. An additional 1,388 Canadians died while serving with the Royal Flying
Corps, while the small Royal Canadian Navy lost 150 men from all causes.
The Wounded:
Almost one-third of all Canadians who served in the war were wounded at some point. 138,000 Canadian soldiers were wounded in battle, a further 34,000 were injured while serving away from
the front lines. Of those who survived their injuries, 3,461 men and one woman had limbs amputated. Over 9,000 Canadians were institutionalized due to severe "shell shock".
Every November 11th we honour their memory on Remembrance Day
