Your orders are to remain in the captured Number Two trench and prepare for a possible German counter-attack, but the opportunity seems too good to miss. The Germans have been retreating all day and may surrendered without a fight. Capturing the third trench should be easy!

Your platoon climbs out of the trench and advances. The going is harder than you expected. The craters are full of deep water and the icy mud clings to everything. Soon everyone is labouring. The earlier attacks have tired them out and the German trench is still in the distance. You signal for everyone to stop and lie low. You realize now that this was a foolish idea.

Just as you start to turn back a lookout yells "Here they come!". The Germans are counter-attacking and you are trapped in No Mans Land!
