"C" is the proper response for a fighting soldier. 1914 events have shown that at the moment trenches are necessary to keep soldiers safe from enemy fire, and they are useful in slowing enemy attacks. However, soldiers must keep a aggressive posture. They cannot allow themselves to think defensively. If trenches are too comfortable soldiers will be reluctant to make attacks. We'll never win the war that way.
